Open Hernia Surgery vs. Laparoscopic Surgery: Pros and Cons

Open Hernia Surgery vs Laparoscopic Surgery

After the diagnosis of hernia has been established, the question is how to fix it. There are two main types of surgical procedures: open surgery and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. Both are safe and effective when in the hands of trained people. Patients looking into open or laparoscopic hernia surgery in Indore should understand how the two differ before deciding.

How Does Open Hernia Surgery Work?

The surgeon cuts once over the hernia, pushes the bulging tissue back in and reinforces the wall, usually with mesh. It is performed under local, spinal, or general anesthesia.

Benefits

  • Suitable when general anesthesia is risky
  • Less run time on simple cases
  • Helpful in very large or complex hernias
  • Generally lower cost of equipment

Vulnerabilities

  • Single large wound
  • Some patients are more uncomfortable for the first few days
  • Longer return to strenuous activity, in many cases

Laparoscopic Surgery Mechanism

Three small cuts are made, each about half to one centimeter long. The mesh is inserted through the abdominal wall from the inside and passed through a camera and fine instruments.

Advantages

  • Smaller incisions and less noticeable scarring
  • Generally, less post-operative pain
  • Faster return to normal work for many patients
  • Both sides of the groin are examined and repaired in a single operation
  • Lowered risk of wound infection

Which is better?

Neither is better for everybody. Laparoscopy is often the preferred option for bilateral or recurrent groin hernias and for patients who want to return to work sooner. Open repair remains a good option for patients who cannot have general anesthesia or have large complex hernias.

Questions to Ask Your Surgeon

  • What is the best procedure for my hernia and my health?
  • How many of these procedures do you do in a year?
  • How long should I expect to be laid up?

The best results are obtained with the right technique for the right patient, by an experienced hernia surgeon in Indore. Book an appointment for a personal recommendation.
