Choosing the Right Surgeon: Questions to Ask Before Your Procedure

Choosing the Right Surgeon

So, once you’ve decided you need hernia surgery, the next big decision is who will do the surgery. The surgeon’s experience and approach have an impact on your comfort, your recovery and the chances of the hernia returning. Having clear questions before you go into the consultation helps you weigh up options and feel good about your choice.

Ask For Experience

Find out how many hernias repairs the surgeon does each year and how often they treat your specific type of hernia, whether it is inguinal, umbilical, incisional or hiatal. Surgeons who see these cases on a regular basis tend to be more familiar with complications and variations in anatomy.

Ask how they recommend the technique

Open, laparoscopic and robotic approaches have all got their place. A good surgeon will tell you why one is better than the other for your situation, not the same method for everyone. Ask if the mesh will be used, what type and why.

Ask About Risks and Recurrence

All surgeries have risks of infection, bleeding, chronic pain, and recurrence. A good surgeon will be open about these and tell you what they see in their own practice. If someone tells you that they can guarantee an outcome, be careful.

Ask What Recovery Looks Like

  • How long will I be in the hospital?
  • When can I go back to work or driving?
  • When is it OK to lift, exercise, or play sports?
  • What pain relief will I get?
  • What symptoms should prompt me to call you?

Inquire about facilities and support

Make sure the hospital has adequate anesthesia support, an operating theater equipped with laparoscopic equipment and emergency facilities. Ask who will be responsible for your follow-up visits and who you can call if a concern comes up at night or on a weekend.

Ask for Prices

Ask for a clear breakdown of the surgeon’s fee, hospital stay, anesthesia, investigations and follow-up and what your insurance is likely to cover, so there are no surprises later.

It is also fair to ask how the surgeon handles complications, and if any additional procedure may be needed. A calm, direct answer is generally a good indication of a surgeon you can trust.

Remember the consultation itself

Observe the way you are listening to, how well explanations are given, and whether you are allowed time to make your decisions. It is perfectly reasonable to seek a second opinion for any planned surgery. Most patients start out by consulting the experienced hernia surgeon in Indore. They can find through referrals and reviews and then compare notes from a second consultation.

You want a surgeon who has the experience, tells you the truth, and has a plan that’s right for you. The right questions up front make for a smoother procedure and a more confident recovery.
