Have you observed that your hernia is more painful, heavy or uncomfortable in the evening, even if it feels tolerable in the morning? This is a frequent experience especially amongst persons who are on their feet for extended hours, walking, lifting, bending or other strenuous activity.

A hernia is when tissue pushes thru a weak spot in the wall of your abdomen. The bulge can be more apparent when you are standing, coughing, straining or exercising.

Why Does Hernia Pain Increase by Evening?

  1. Standing and Walking for Long Periods

Standing for long periods may raise pressure on the abdominal wall. This might make the hernia bulge more noticeable and can cause pain, pressure or discomfort as the day develops. Some NHS guidance says hernia pain can be worse at the end of the day after lots of standing.

  1. High Intra-abdominal Pressure

Lifting a heavy object , repetitive bending or coughing , or straining during a bowel movement . Any activity that puts pressure inside the abdomen . These activities can worsen hernia-related pain.

  1. Be Physically Active Throughout the Day

Even these can be uncomfortable if you repeat normal activities for numerous hours. Walking, climbing stairs, lifting or physical work might put extra strain around the weaker abdominal wall. Pain or discomfort may consequently be more obvious later in the day.

  1. The Bulge: A More and More Obvious Feature

A hernia frequently bulges out more when you are standing or straining, and may go back in when you lie down. This adjustment can make you feel pressure or heaviness throughout the day.

Why Does Hernia Pain Improve When You Lie Down Sometimes?

Some hernias bulge more when you are standing or sitting up but become less noticeable when you lie down. The bulging tissue can sometimes be pushed back into the abdominal cavity when you lie down. Therefore, rest can relieve pressure and discomfort. But an improvement after lying down does not mean the hernia has healed. Normally a hernia does not heal by itself without the right therapy.

Does your hernia pain increase?

Just because you’re uncomfortable after a busy day doesn’t imply you have an emergency. But new, acute, sudden or fast worsening pain should not be overlooked.

If your hernia is hard to the touch or cannot be pushed back within your abdomen, call your doctor very once, especially if you also have nausea, vomiting, fever, trouble passing stool or gas, or a protrusion that is red, purple, or dark. These may be indicators of an incarcerated or strangulated hernia which may need emergency treatment.
