Why does a hernia bulge get bigger when you cough or stand?

hernia surgeon in Indore

Have you ever noticed that your hernia bulge becomes more visible when you cough or when you stand up or even when you bend down or lift something

This is something that happens to a lot of people with hernias.

It happens because when you do these things it puts pressure inside your abdomen.

This pressure can push some of your tissue through a weak spot in your abdominal wall, which makes the bulge more noticeable.

When you cough it creates an increase in pressure inside your abdomen.

If there is an area in your abdominal wall some tissue or intestine can get pushed toward and through that opening.

So your hernia may look bigger when you cough. Then it might look smaller again when the pressure goes down.

If you have a cough that just will not go away it can put a lot of stress on your wall over time.

You might have also noticed that your hernia is more noticeable when you are standing up.

This is because when you stand, gravity and the pressure inside your abdomen can make the tissue that is sticking out more visible.

Some hernias might even look like they are gone when you lie down because the tissue can move back into your cavity.

That is why a doctor might want to examine your hernia when you are standing up. They might even ask you to cough or strain during the exam.

Just because your hernia bulge gets bigger sometimes it does not mean that your hernia is getting worse.

If your hernia is getting bigger over time or if it hurts or if you cannot push it back in you should go see a surgeon.

Hernias do not usually fix themselves. Sometimes they can get stuck or cut off from blood supply.

You should go see a doctor away if:

  • Your hernia suddenly gets a lot bigger
  • The bulge gets hard. You cannot push it back in
  • You get severe pain
  • The skin over the bulge turns red, purple or dark
  • You feel sick throw up your abdomen swells up or you have trouble passing stool or gas

These things can mean that your hernia is stuck or cut off from blood supply and you need to see a doctor away.

Can surgery make the bulge go away for good?

The treatment you need depends on what kind of hernia you have how big it is and how it is affecting you.

Sometimes surgery is the option and it might even be possible to do it with a special kind of surgery called laparoscopic hernia repair.

A surgeon can take a look at your hernia. Figure out the best way to treat it.

If you have a bulge in your abdomen or groin that you have not gotten checked out do not ignore it just because it goes away when you lie down.

You should get it checked out so that you can figure out what is going on and get the treatment.
